EDENVALE – Television presenter and musician Molemo Maarohanye, known professionally as Jub Jub, has been arrested following an alleged kidnapping and shooting incident involving an e-hailing driver.
The arrest follows a confrontation in Edenvale where Maarohanye is accused of forcing a driver into a vehicle and discharging a firearm after alleging the driver was involved with his girlfriend.
South African Police Service (SAPS) officials have confirmed the arrest of a 45-year-old man facing several serious charges.
Details of the Confrontation
The incident began when an e-hailing driver transported a female passenger to a residence in Edenvale. Upon arrival, the driver was reportedly confronted by the suspect.
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe provided the following account of the event:
“It is alleged that at approximately 07:30, the e-hailing driver had transported a female passenger to a residence in Edenvale when he was confronted by the suspect, who accused him of being involved in a romantic relationship with his girlfriend,”
Police allege that the suspect then forced the driver into a vehicle and prevented him from leaving. During the encounter, the suspect reportedly fired a weapon in the driver’s direction.
“The suspect allegedly forced the e-hailing driver into his vehicle and prevented him from leaving. During the incident, the suspect reportedly discharged a firearm in the direction of the driver,” Mathe said.
The driver managed to escape the vehicle unharmed and immediately drove to a nearby police station to report the crime. Police say no injuries were reported, but the incident is being treated as a serious offence involving the alleged misuse of a firearm in a residential area.
Legal Charges and Proceedings
Following the report, police acted swiftly to locate and apprehend the suspect. Maarohanye now faces a series of criminal charges, including:
- Kidnapping
- Unlawful discharge of a firearm
- Defeating the ends of justice
These offences fall under South Africa’s criminal law framework, including provisions of the Firearms Control Act, which regulates the possession and use of firearms and imposes strict penalties for unlawful discharge.
The arrest represents the latest in a series of legal complications for the media personality, whose previous court appearances – including a high-profile culpable homicide conviction that drew national attention to his public image and rehabilitation – have been a matter of public record and debate over accountability for public figures.
Maarohanye is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where prosecutors will outline the state’s case and indicate whether they will oppose bail, a key decision point in cases involving alleged violent conduct.
Police have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing and have not released further details regarding the evidence collected or the status of the firearm. SAPS has urged members of the public, including drivers working in the e-hailing sector, to continue reporting intimidation, armed confrontations, or other suspected criminal conduct to support enforcement of South Africa’s broader public safety and gun-control regime.
