Bruno Fernandes to Sit Out Portugal-Norway Clash as Caution Takes Priority
Portugal Manage Captain’s Fitness Amid Nations League Demands
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is set to miss Portugal’s UEFA Nations League meeting with Norway as a precaution, with head coach Jorge Jesus opting to protect the midfielder’s fitness after a recent injury issue.
Fernandes started in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales on Thursday, but the playmaker was withdrawn in stoppage time and later missed Saturday’s final training session. Jesus has since confirmed that the 30-year-old has been dealing with what he described as a “complicated problem” in recent weeks.
“In the game against Wales, we went in with all the available players but Bruno Fernandes came off with a complicated problem,” Jesus explained in his press conference. “We’ll see what happens until tomorrow. Experience tells me that on the third day not all players manage to recover but that’s the same for Norway as for us.”
The Portugal coach stressed that squad depth will underpin his selection decisions: “The player who comes in gives as many guarantees as the one who might come off, that’s what I’ll base my decision on.”
Injury Management and National-Team Calculus
Jesus revealed that his medical staff had highlighted two players as primary fitness concerns in the build-up to the Norway game, with full-back Nuno Mendes rated as having a chance of featuring. Fernandes’ situation is being handled more cautiously.
“The medical team identified these two players as the most concerning, Nuno Mendes could be available for the game,” Jesus said. “The other case [Fernandes] involves treatment and recovery time. He’s coming off an injury at United, and he told me he’s been playing with that pain for the last three games, which is hindering him.
“It was one of the factors that prevented Bruno from playing at his best against Wales.”
Fernandes’ admission that he has played through pain for three consecutive club matches underlines the balancing act facing both Portugal and Manchester United. With a congested calendar and the Nations League now an established part of the international schedule under the governance of UEFA, national associations are increasingly scrutinised over how they manage club stars during windows that fall in the middle of domestic campaigns.
Norway Rest a Relief for Manchester United
Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales, in which Fernandes started before being replaced by Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Joao Neves in added time, strengthened their position in the group. However, the decision to now rest their captain reflects a medium-term view of both the national team’s and the player’s needs.
Jesus has been clear that the Denmark fixture later in the window is shaping his planning.
“I’ve already spoken to him and I prefer not to risk it in this game so he’s fully fit for the Denmark match,” he said, confirming that Fernandes will be held back against Norway on Sunday evening.
For Manchester United, the scenario is close to optimal under the circumstances. The best outcome outlined is that Fernandes misses the first meeting with Norway, returns for the game against Denmark and then comes through a second clash with Norway, scheduled for 4 October, without further setback.
Fixture Pressure for Club and Country
Fernandes’ management over this international break comes at a time when United’s season requires stability from senior players. The club resume action a week on Saturday, when they host Tottenham at Old Trafford. Tottenham sit bottom of the table going into that fixture, and United will view the match as a realistic chance to reset their domestic campaign after a difficult opening spell.
For both Portugal and United, the calculus is clear:
- Portugal protect a key creative leader for the remainder of their Nations League schedule.
- United avoid unnecessary minutes for a player already carrying an issue and crucial to their midfield structure.
Within this context, resting Fernandes against Norway is less a short-term blow and more a strategic choice shaped by the overlapping demands of the international and club calendars that define the modern elite game.
