RAWALPINDI – Bushra Bibi, wife of incarcerated former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, was transported to a hospital on April 16, 2026.
The development was confirmed by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, who stated that the move occurred late in the evening.
The hospitalization comes amid a series of reported health complications for both the former premier and his wife, who are currently held at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
Requests for Medical Briefings and Family Access
Barrister Gohar Khan announced the news via social media on April 17, 2026, noting that he had been alerted to the situation through a message rather than a formal prison or hospital notification.
“Late night, I was informed through a message that Bushra BB had been shifted to the hospital last night and that I would be briefed about the treatment,” Gohar stated.
He indicated that he is currently awaiting a detailed briefing on her medical condition from prison and health authorities before pursuing formal requests for family visits.

Beyond the immediate care of Bushra Bibi, Gohar Khan is also calling for the former premier to be granted similar medical access and family visitation, framing the issue as one of due process and humane treatment of high-profile detainees.
“Awaiting that, I would request a meeting of family members with her. And also a meeting of khan sab’s family with him and that khan sab be shifted to the hospital for treatment,” he said.
He further argued that such access is a “basic right according to law,” describing the health status of both individuals as “too serious.” Under Pakistan’s prison rules and the broader guarantees of dignity and access to medical care embedded in the Constitution of Pakistan, inmates are entitled to adequate treatment and regulated family visitation.
Legal Status and Incarceration
The couple is currently serving sentences following a court ruling in late 2025 that further tightened Imran Khan’s exclusion from formal politics and deepened PTI’s confrontation with state institutions.
- Sentence Date: December 20, 2025
- Term: 17 years in prison
- Case: Toshakhana-II
- Charge: Unlawful retention of a Bulgari jewellery set gifted by the Saudi crown prince.
The Toshakhana cases relate to the handling and declaration of gifts received by public officeholders from foreign states, a process overseen by Pakistan’s institutional gift repository, the Toshakhana. Convictions in these matters have become a touchstone in Pakistan’s ongoing debate over transparency, asset declarations, and the accountability of senior elected officials.
Both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi remain incarcerated at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, a high-security facility that has become the focal point of political, legal, and human-rights scrutiny as their cases continue through appeals and related proceedings.
Timeline of Vision and Eye Complications
The current hospitalization follows a period of documented ocular health issues for both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, raising persistent questions from PTI about the adequacy of in-custody medical care.
In March 2026, Bushra Bibi underwent a medical examination at Adiala Jail after reporting headaches, blurred vision, and the presence of black spots and flashes in her right eye.
Dr. Muhammad Arif Khan, head of the ophthalmology department at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), diagnosed her with the following:
- Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) in the right eye
- Myopia
- Astigmatism
Following the diagnosis, she was prescribed glasses, eye drops, and medication, with a recommendation for a follow-up check-up after four weeks. Her transfer to hospital on April 16 suggests doctors deemed that her condition, or its complications, required management beyond on-site jail facilities.
Imran Khan has faced similar complications. In late January 2026, he underwent a minor eye procedure at PIMS.
Following this, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed that the procedure lasted approximately 20 minutes and was conducted with the former premier’s written consent, emphasizing at the time that government doctors were acting in line with specialist recommendations.
The severity of the former premier’s condition was highlighted in a report by his lawyer, Salman Safdar, acting as amicus curiae. Safdar reported to the Supreme Court that Imran Khan had lost 85% of the vision in his right eye and required urgent access to specialists, placing his treatment squarely within the judiciary’s view of custodial standards.
Medical interventions continued into March 2026, including a second dose of an intravitreal anti-VEGF injection. PIMS subsequently reported “significant improvement” in his vision, and a third dose of the injection was administered to the former premier in late March 2026.
As of April 17, 2026, Barrister Gohar Khan continues to await a formal medical briefing regarding the current treatment of Bushra Bibi. PTI officials say they will decide on further legal and administrative steps-potentially including applications to prison authorities and the courts for enhanced medical relief and visitation-once that briefing is received.
