PARIS – Indian defence technology firm MKU Limited and Jakarta-based Republikorp signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on June 15 to localise the production of night-vision devices in Indonesia.
The agreement, announced during the Eurosatory 2026 defence exhibition in Paris, establishes a framework for the joint development of electro-optics manufacturing capabilities within the Southeast Asian nation.
The partnership signals a strategic shift toward indigenous capability development for the Indonesian defence sector, reducing reliance on direct imports by establishing local industrial infrastructure for critical surveillance and situational awareness hardware.
Production of Electro-Optic Systems
The initial phase of the collaboration will focus on the manufacturing of night-vision devices, specifically monocular and binocular systems tailored to meet Indonesian defence requirements.
The agreement includes the integration of optronics products into the existing Indonesian defence infrastructure. This includes the application of specialized hardware such as the Netro NC-3000, which is designed for urban operations, border patrol, and reconnaissance.
“The collaboration aims to create a foundation for broader electro-optic co-operation, leveraging MKU’s expertise across night vision, thermal imaging, and next-generation soldier situational awareness technologies,” Karan Gupta, MKU’s vice-president for international sales, stated on May 18.
Industrial Division of Responsibilities
The MoU outlines a specific division of labor to facilitate the transfer of technology and the establishment of a viable production line in Jakarta, in line with Indonesia’s push to grow a domestic defence-industrial base under its Defence Industry Law (Law No. 16/2012), which encourages localisation and structured technology-transfer arrangements.
- MKU Limited (Netro Optronics division): Responsible for providing the core technology, product and quality architecture, technical support, and necessary training for localisation, drawing on its existing portfolio of military-grade optronics and soldier systems.
- Republikorp: Responsible for establishing local manufacturing infrastructure, managing engagement with regulators, developing the local workforce, and expanding market access within Indonesia, including potential opportunities with other state-owned and private-sector defence entities.
Both companies will jointly manage quality assurance and certification processes to ensure that the locally produced systems align with the specific technical standards of the Indonesian military and can be integrated into existing command, control, and surveillance networks.
Indo-Pacific Strategic Framework
The partnership is a component of MKU’s broader Indo-Pacific partnerships strategy, targeting markets that prioritize the modernisation of defence assets and the transfer of industrial knowledge. The announcement at Eurosatory – a leading global land and air defence and security showcase that convenes governments, procurement officials, and industry at Paris Nord Villepinte (Eurosatory official site) – positions the MoU within ongoing regional efforts to localise sensitive capabilities.
Indonesia is identified by MKU as a primary strategic market due to its current emphasis on indigenous capability development and defence modernisation, including long-term plans to increase local content in major defence procurements and reduce exposure to supply-chain disruptions.
The execution of the agreement remains contingent upon regulatory compliance in both India and Indonesia. The extent of technology transfer is subject to agreed programme objectives and applicable export-control regulations, as well as future approvals by relevant defence and industrial authorities overseeing sensitive dual-use and military technologies.
