MERSEYSIDE – Merseyside Police have launched an investigation following a shooting inside a café that occurred during a period of high footfall.
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Nuttall described the incident as a “dangerous and reckless act of violence,” noting that the timing and location of the attack increased the risk to public safety.
The investigation is currently in its early stages as officers work to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible. No arrests had been confirmed at the time of writing, and police have not yet disclosed how many suspects they are seeking or whether the incident is being treated as targeted or random.
Public Appeal for Evidence
Authorities are seeking assistance from the public to identify suspects and reconstruct the timeline of the shooting. Because the incident took place at a busy time of day with numerous people in the vicinity, investigators believe critical evidence may have been captured by private surveillance systems and passers-by.
Police are specifically requesting that residents and business owners review the following:
- CCTV systems
- Vehicle dashcam footage
- Doorbell camera recordings
DCI Nuttall stated: “I am appealing to those who we haven’t already spoken to, please get in touch. I also urge people in the area to please check your CCTV, dashcam devices or doorbell footage to see if it has captured anything or anyone suspicious which will help with our enquiries.”
Investigators emphasized that no piece of information is too small to be useful, stating that any detail, “however insignificant it may seem, could be vital to our investigation.” Members of the public can contact Merseyside Police via the non-emergency 101 number or provide information anonymously through established crime-reporting channels.
Firearms Enforcement Strategy
The incident occurs amid a broader departmental mandate to eliminate illegal weaponry from local communities. As the territorial police force for the region, Merseyside Police operate under strict UK firearms legislation, including the Firearms Act 1968 and subsequent amendments, which set out licensing rules, prohibited weapons categories and sentencing frameworks for gun-related offences.
In Merseyside – a metropolitan county in North West England that includes Liverpool and surrounding boroughs – police have, in recent years, placed particular emphasis on intelligence-led operations to disrupt organised crime groups and recover weapons from residential areas and commercial premises.
DCI Nuttall highlighted the impact of such crimes on community safety, stating:
“We know that guns cause misery on our streets and we would ask for the public’s help in coming forward with any information they have so we can find the person or people responsible.”
He further affirmed the force’s objective to ensure perpetrators are held accountable: “Merseyside Police is committed to removing firearms from our streets and bringing those who carry or use them to justice and we would ask our communities to help us by coming forward and telling us what they know.”
The investigation remains active, and police continue to canvas the area for further witnesses. The force has indicated that high-visibility patrols will remain in place in the immediate vicinity of the café to reassure local residents and businesses as inquiries continue.
