TABLE VIEW – A 33-year-old man was killed in a shooting at a café within the Marine Circle shopping center on May 25, 2026.
Western Cape police have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of the victim’s body on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred during midday business hours in a high-traffic commercial area, prompting authorities to seek public assistance in identifying the perpetrator and a motive. The killing forms part of a broader category of serious violent crime investigated under South Africa’s Criminal Procedure Act, which sets out how police must secure crime scenes, collect evidence and pursue suspects in murder cases.
Incident Details
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 14:00. Upon arrival, first responders located the victim in a prone position inside the café, which was trading at the time.
“They found the body of the 33-year-old male with several gunshot wounds lying on his stomach. The victim was declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel,” van Wyk stated.
Shoppers and staff in adjacent businesses were temporarily restricted from entering the immediate area as officers cordoned off the scene to allow forensic teams to document ballistic evidence and secure CCTV footage from surrounding premises.
Investigation Status
Law enforcement officials have indicated that the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. At this stage, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has not established a motive for the attack, and no suspects have been apprehended.
The investigation is currently focused on gathering evidence from the café and identifying potential witnesses who may have seen the shooter or the events leading up to the gunfire. As with other major violent-crime dockets, the case will be handled within SAPS’s established investigative framework, with detectives required to report progress to senior commanders and, where necessary, coordinate with prosecuting authorities.
Authorities have emphasized that premature speculation about gang links or targeted intimidation could undermine witness cooperation, urging residents instead to come forward directly to investigators.
Public Assistance and Reporting
Detective Captain Jood Tieties has been assigned as the lead investigating officer. The SAPS is utilizing both traditional and digital reporting mechanisms to gather intelligence, including the MySAPS mobile application, which allows for anonymous submissions and forms part of the police service’s broader community-policing strategy.
Those with information are urged to use the following contact points:
- Investigating Officer: Detective Captain Jood Tieties (079 894 1257)
- Crime Stop: 08600 10111
- Anonymous Reporting: MySAPS mobile application
The case remains open as police continue to process forensic evidence from the scene and review any digital material, including surveillance footage and cellphone records, that could assist in identifying the shooter. Authorities have appealed to businesses in the Marine Circle precinct to retain and make available any relevant video recordings, underscoring the role of private security infrastructure in supporting public-law enforcement efforts.
