Lo Celso questions consistency after overhead kick ruled out against Barcelona
The Argentine midfielder voiced his frustration after seeing a spectacular overhead kick disallowed in first-half stoppage time against Barcelona, with the goal ruled out for a handball by team-mate Cucho Hernández in the build-up.
The incident came at a pivotal moment, as the strike would have changed the scoreline going into the break. Instead, the referee, supported by video review, judged that Hernández had handled the ball before Lo Celso’s finish, leading to the goal being chalked off.
“Would it have been disallowed for Barcelona?”
Speaking afterwards, Lo Celso stopped short of directly accusing officials of bias towards Barcelona, but made clear his doubts about how the laws are being applied in high-profile fixtures.
Asked whether decisions are interpreted differently when Barcelona are involved, he replied: “I can talk about the specific incidents I experienced on the pitch. In the end, Cucho’s touch may or may not be an offence, but there are a lot of things happening in that incident. There’s a rebound, the ball goes up, and there’s a challenge for the ball with the head… I really don’t know.”
He then sharpened the focus on consistency, adding: “But if it had been Barcelona who scored the goal, would it also have been disallowed for that offence? I don’t know the truth, but what I’m saying is that there’s a header challenge and a lot of things happen in a match.”
The handball law and attacking phases
The decision turned on one of the most debated areas in modern football: attacking handball. Under the current Laws of the Game, overseen by IFAB and FIFA, any deliberate handball by an attacking player is penalised, and even non-deliberate contact can often lead to a goal being disallowed if it is deemed to have created a clear advantage in the immediate phase of play.
In this case, the referee judged that Hernández’s involvement constituted a handball offence in the attacking move, nullifying Lo Celso’s overhead kick. The Argentine’s reaction highlights the difficulty players face in understanding where officials will draw the line when the ball ricochets, rebounds, and is contested in the air before a decisive finish.
Fine margins in Barcelona fixtures
Matches involving Barcelona are routinely played under an intense spotlight, with refereeing decisions scrutinised from every angle by clubs, players, and supporters. Lo Celso’s remarks tap into a long-running debate about whether big clubs benefit from more favourable interpretations in 50-50 situations, even when no explicit allegation is made.
For the players on the pitch, moments like this go beyond a single highlight. A disallowed goal in first-half added time can alter the tactical landscape of the second period, forcing the side denied the goal to chase the game differently and potentially reshaping the balance of risk and control.
Sporting and competitive implications
While no scoreline was changed on the record, the annulled overhead kick carried clear competitive weight. A valid goal at that stage could have:
- Shifted the momentum heading into half-time, impacting both teams’ mentality.
- Forced Barcelona to adjust their game plan, opening up space for counter-attacks.
- Influenced substitution patterns, with coaches reacting to a different scoreline.
For Lo Celso personally, such a goal in a marquee fixture would have added a signature moment to his season and strengthened his case in selection debates at club and international level. For his club, fine margins in matches of this profile can be decisive over the course of a campaign, especially in tight battles for European qualification or domestic positioning.
Continuing scrutiny on officiating
Lo Celso’s comments stop at raising questions rather than making accusations, but they contribute to a broader conversation within elite football about transparency and consistency in video-assisted decisions. When players highlight that “a lot of things happen in a match” during complex passages of play, they are pointing to a reality that officials, technology, and regulators are still learning to manage in real time.
