Hasselbaink backs injured England forward and dismisses ‘mind games’ claims
Asked if “games” of that nature are being played, ex-Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – speaking courtesy of MrQ – insisted the player at the centre of the latest England injury debate is simply protecting his body rather than engaging in selection politics.
Hasselbaink told GOAL: “I don’t think that he is that kind of person to play games.
“The boy wants to play football. He’s all about his football. And let’s not forget, he played a lot of games in the previous years. And that’s why he was injured last year. And I think every little injury now, he just wants to look after himself properly so that he can have a good season.
“So yeah, I do think that he’s injured. He’s got something. And let’s not forget, he also wants to give the right impression when he’s there with England and be the best that he can. And if he’s injured, he’s not going to do anybody justice.”
Injury caution in an intense calendar
Hasselbaink’s comments speak directly to one of the central tensions in the modern elite game: players are navigating a crowded domestic and international schedule in which they can feature across league fixtures, domestic cups and European competition, then report for international duty soon after.
At that level, the difference between playing through discomfort and withdrawing for treatment can shape an entire season. A player carrying an issue into club action risks aggravating the problem and missing a significant block of matches. That, in turn, can affect not only their club’s campaign but also their availability for upcoming international windows.
It is within this context that Hasselbaink frames the forward’s approach. By highlighting the volume of games “in the previous years” and a subsequent injury “last year”, he underlines the long-term demands placed on established internationals, particularly those expected to start regularly for both club and country.
Balancing club demands with England ambitions
For any England international, the decision to step back from a squad due to a knock is rarely straightforward. Competitive fixtures and major tournaments are scheduled through the international match calendar set by world and European governing bodies, including The Football Association for England’s national teams, and missing those windows can have consequences for form, rhythm and selection.
Hasselbaink stresses that the player “wants to give the right impression when he’s there with England and be the best that he can.” That sentiment goes to the heart of international selection: players are judged not only on club-level performance but also on how they train and perform once they report for duty.
If a forward arrives short of fitness, it can affect:
- Competition for places in attacking positions, where small margins often decide starting roles.
- The manager’s tactical planning across a block of fixtures, particularly in qualifying campaigns or tournament build-up.
- The player’s ability to sustain form into the next phase of the domestic season.
Hasselbaink’s argument is that turning up injured serves neither the national team nor the individual. A compromised performance can weaken England’s attacking options in key matches and may disrupt long‑term planning if it worsens the underlying problem.
Player welfare and perception of ‘games’
The suggestion that some players might “play games” around availability – whether by managing injuries to favour club fixtures or by being cautious in specific international windows – has become a recurring talking point as calendars have grown more congested.
By stating, “I don’t think that he is that kind of person to play games,” Hasselbaink challenges that perception in this case. He frames the situation not as a tactical move but as an example of a player who has already endured a significant workload, suffered an injury, and is now taking a more cautious approach to ensure he can sustain performance levels over an entire campaign.
That stance reflects a broader shift in how injury management is viewed at the top of the sport. Clubs and national associations increasingly work with detailed medical and performance data, and there is heightened awareness that short‑term decisions can have a long‑term impact on careers.
Implications for club and country campaigns
For the player involved, the priority now is clearly to “have a good season” by managing “every little injury” carefully. For his club, a fit and consistently available forward is central to maintaining attacking cohesion over the course of domestic and European campaigns.
For England, the immediate absence of an established attacking option in a given window may force tactical adjustments or provide opportunities for other forwards to stake a claim. Over a longer cycle, however, measured injury management can help ensure that key players reach major tournaments in peak condition, rather than carrying the effects of chronic issues accrued over multiple seasons.
Hasselbaink’s defence of the player’s character and intentions speaks to the delicate balance in modern elite football: the need to respect the demands of both club and country while acknowledging that in a congested calendar, preserving fitness is often the most responsible decision for all parties involved.
