Savannah Guthrie Pleads for Help in Search for Missing Mother Nancy Guthrie Amid Ransom Note Claims

by Mark Ellison

TUCSON – Savannah Guthrie, host of NBC’s Today show, has issued a public plea for information regarding the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, following reports that a ransom note indicates the 84-year-old is deceased.

The appeal comes as family members and investigators grapple with conflicting communications and a lack of physical evidence since the elder Guthrie vanished from her Tucson-area home on February 1.

Guthrie, who typically remains distanced from the editorial coverage of the case at NBC News, addressed the public directly to urge witnesses to come forward, emphasizing that she is speaking as a daughter, not as a journalist or network representative.

“We are in agony, and we cannot be at peace. … We love our mom. We’ll never stop looking for her,” Guthrie said.

While acknowledging the possibility that her mother may have passed away, Guthrie stated, “I can’t pretend I’m not here. And since I am, I want to just take the opportunity to ask people – really to beg people – to come forward. Somebody knows something.”

Evidence from the Tucson Residence

The investigation began on February 1 when Nancy Guthrie, who lived alone, was reported missing after family members were unable to reach her. Initial forensic evidence at the scene pointed toward a violent encounter.

Investigators discovered blood on the porch of the residence, and surveillance footage later became a central piece of the evidence. More than a week after the disappearance, the FBI released video from a camera positioned outside the front door showing a masked stranger approaching the home around the time Guthrie is believed to have gone missing.

The case is currently being handled by federal authorities in coordination with local law enforcement under the federal kidnapping statute, which gives the FBI jurisdiction when a victim may have been transported across state or international borders under 18 U.S.C. § 1201. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has referred all inquiries regarding the specific evidence and ransom communications to the FBI, which has characterized the case as an ongoing, active investigation.

Details of Ransom Demands

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding ransom notes received during the investigation. While some details were withheld during the early stages of the probe to avoid compromising leads and to protect the integrity of potential prosecution, it has since been revealed that the family was aware of the communications and that federal investigators have treated them as significant pieces of evidence.

The notes included the following claims and demands:

  • One note demanded millions of dollars in bitcoin in exchange for the return of Nancy Guthrie.
  • A second note stated that the victim had died shortly after her disappearance.
  • The second note further claimed that those responsible for the kidnapping did not intend to kill her.

The FBI has declined to comment on the authenticity, timing, or origin of these notes, citing standard practice in complex kidnapping and extortion cases. Authorities have also not disclosed whether any portion of the ransom demand was met or whether the communications are believed to have originated from a single source.

Search and Recovery Efforts

Following the disappearance, extensive search operations were launched across the rugged terrain of Southern Arizona, coordinated through local emergency management protocols and supported by federal resources. Teams of volunteers and professional searchers focused on areas characterized by dense brush, boulders, and cacti, where heat and limited visibility can quickly complicate rescue or recovery efforts.

These efforts eventually expanded to include a targeted search near the Arizona-Mexico border, a region that routinely sees joint operations between U.S. and Mexican authorities in missing-person and smuggling cases. Despite the scale of the operations, those searches did not result in the discovery of Nancy Guthrie or any further physical evidence.

Guthrie and her siblings have previously utilized social media to share videos urging the public to provide tips and asking for prayers, echoing law enforcement appeals for anyone with information – even details that may seem minor – to contact the FBI or local authorities. Tip lines remain open, and officials have reiterated that information can be provided anonymously through established federal and local channels.

The FBI continues to lead the investigation into the kidnapping and the identity of the masked individual captured on surveillance video, with the case operating within the broader federal framework for missing and exploited persons maintained by the FBI. Investigators have not named any suspects and have publicly stressed that the priority remains determining what happened to Nancy Guthrie and providing answers to her family.
