Victoria Aveyard Shifts to Adult Fantasy Romance with Tempest Releasing September 2026

by Elena Rossi

NEW YORK – Author Victoria Aveyard has announced a strategic transition from young adult (YA) fiction to the adult fantasy romance market with the upcoming publication of “Tempest.” During the BookCon convention held April 18 and 19 at the Javits Center, Aveyard detailed the development of the project and the timeline for its release.

The pivot to adult fiction marks a significant shift in Aveyard’s professional trajectory, 11 years after the publication of her first novel, “Red Queen.” By moving into the adult fantasy romance sector, Aveyard is expanding her intellectual property footprint and targeting a different audience demographic than that of her previous YA series, including “Red Queen” and “Realm Breaker.”

Industry Presence and Market Engagement

The appearance at BookCon, the first such event since 2019, served as a primary venue for Aveyard to engage with early readers and industry peers in one of the U.S. publishing industry’s largest consumer-facing showcases. Operating under the broader framework of U.S. copyright and publishing law, including Title 17 of the United States Code, BookCon gives authors a rare chance to test new concepts directly with their core retail market before publication.

The event included a live taping of Aveyard’s podcast, “Plot Twist,” featuring writer Soman Chainani, and professional exchanges with authors Cassandra Clare, R.F. Kuang, and Veronica Roth, underscoring her position within a cohort of commercially influential fantasy and speculative fiction writers whose work often informs acquisition and marketing decisions by major publishing houses.

While Aveyard continued to sign copies of her established YA works, the event also facilitated the targeted distribution of advanced reader copies of “Tempest” to booksellers, librarians, reviewers and influencers, a standard pre-publication practice that helps shape ordering decisions and shelf placement across the North American bookstore and library systems.

Structural Development of the Tempest Duology

The production of “Tempest” involved significant structural revisions to meet physical publishing standards and cost constraints on printing, shipping and retail pricing. Aveyard stated that the initial draft reached 300,000 words, totaling approximately 1,000 pages. Due to the challenges associated with the physical binding and distribution of a volume of that size, the project was restructured from a standalone novel into a duology, aligning it more closely with commercial norms for epic fantasy releases.

The narrative utilizes alternating “before” and “after” chapters, focusing on Catrine Rose, a noblewoman in an empire colonizing the Lyrian Sea who eventually operates a pirate tavern. The plot follows her evolving relationship with a captured pirate, Valerian Kane, positioning the story at the intersection of maritime adventure, political conquest and romantic intrigue.

Creative Process and Agent Coordination

Aveyard indicated that the concept for “Tempest” originated from a separate project – a reincarnation story spanning four different time periods – that was ultimately reconfigured after internal development discussions. Upon identifying the strength of the pirate-themed storyline, Aveyard submitted two separate pitches to her agent, effectively stress-testing which narrative was better suited to launch a new adult-focused franchise.

“She and her assistant came back with an email almost immediately, saying, ‘Do the pirates,’” Aveyard said.

The author noted that the project’s tone was influenced by the 2003 film “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” specifically citing the soundtrack and the cinematic experience of the film as catalysts for the story. The decision reflects a broader trend of genre fiction drawing on established Hollywood visual and musical language, as studios and publishers increasingly coordinate around adaptable, cross-media intellectual property governed by standard rights and licensing frameworks under U.S. copyright law.

Release Schedule, Market Positioning and Sequential Planning

Aveyard confirmed the title and release window for the second installment of the series. The sequel is titled “Tyrant” and focuses on themes of kingship and oppression, extending the series’ exploration of power, resistance and colonial rule – themes that often resonate with readers attuned to real-world debates over governance and empire.

The publication timeline is as follows:

  • Tempest: September 2026 (adult fantasy romance; duology opener)
  • Tyrant: Summer 2027 (concluding volume, continuing the political and romantic arc)

Publishing “Tempest” and “Tyrant” in rapid succession allows Aveyard and her publisher to maintain momentum in a crowded fantasy marketplace, while giving booksellers and international rights buyers a clear scheduling horizon for inventory, translation and adaptation discussions. “Tempest” is currently in the pre-publication phase with a scheduled release in September 2026, with early consumer response at events like BookCon and through advance copies likely to inform downstream marketing and distribution decisions.
