Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker Get Planning Permission for Donegal Property Extension

by Elena Rossi

DONEGAL – Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker have been granted planning permission by the Donegal County Council for an extension to their residential property in southwest Donegal.

The approval for the Roelough property highlights the ongoing investment by high-profile entertainment figures in the maintenance and expansion of ancestral European holdings.

The approved development consists of a split-level outhouse and garden room, which includes a first-floor mezzanine loft. The structure is designated as ancillary to the existing cottage.

The property has been held by the Broderick family for over 50 years. In 2018, the couple completed a comprehensive renovation and extension of the cottage.

Official planning notices for the current project were filed under the name “Mr and Mrs Matthew Broderick.”

The application was assessed under Ireland’s statutory planning regime, which requires local authorities such as Donegal County Council to consider design, scale, environmental impact and impact on neighbouring properties before granting approval, in line with the national framework set out by the Planning and Development Act 2000.

Regional Integration and Assets

Sarah Jessica Parker has frequently utilized social media to document the family’s presence in the region, citing an affinity for the Magee clothing brand and local produce. Their recurring visits have coincided with peak holiday periods, adding a measure of soft visibility for the area’s tourism and craft sectors.

Broderick has previously commented on the cultural significance of the property and his connection to the area.

“Donegal, it’s unbelievable. It gave me a whole new childhood in a way,” Broderick said. “I grew up in New York City, I was born and raised here, so the fact that my parents managed to put the money together to get us there (Donegal) was a great gift to us. I really, really got to know my (Kilcar) neighbors and that just doesn’t happen in the same way here in the US. We just really felt welcomed there. It’s another culture, a wonderful place.”

The couple’s sustained engagement with the locality – from patronage of family-owned businesses to regular participation in the summer season – has helped position the Roelough home as both a private retreat and a visible example of diaspora families reinvesting in rural Irish communities, a pattern mirrored in wider efforts to keep townlands populated and services viable.

The planning permission has been granted; the project is currently in the pre-construction phase, with detailed design and contractor procurement expected to follow in line with standard local authority conditions.
