Adrian Dunbar Awarded Freedom of the City of London for Outstanding Contributions to Drama

LONDON –

Adrian Dunbar, the Northern Irish actor best known for his lead role in the BBC One drama Line of Duty, has been granted the Freedom of the City of London.

The honor, awarded by the City of London Corporation, recognizes Dunbar’s contributions to drama and his ongoing support for emerging acting talent. The designation serves as a civic acknowledgment of professional achievement and institutional influence within the London arts sector, conferred under the Corporation’s historic powers of civic patronage as set out in the City of London (Various Powers) Act 1956 and related local legislation.

Guildhall School and Civic Recognition

The nomination for the honor was submitted by Emily Benn, Chair of Guildhall, and Alderman William Russell, a former Lord Mayor of the City of London and senior figure within the City’s civic establishment. The award follows a long-standing relationship between the actor and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where Dunbar arrived in 1980 and graduated in 1983.

Nearly two years prior to this ceremony, Dunbar was awarded the Fellowship of Guildhall School, the institution’s highest accolade, in recognition of his professional achievements and his work with students and recent graduates.

“Adrian Dunbar is a Guildhall School great: one of the defining actors of his generation, thrilling us with unforgettable performances,” said Emily Benn. “All of us at Guildhall School are hugely proud of everything that Adrian has achieved since he graduated, and we are also very grateful for his ongoing support of the school and our students, helping the next generation of Guildhall talent to go on to thrive on stages and screens around the world.”

The Freedom of the City of London is a tradition believed to date back to 1237, granted to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the life of the city. While the modern Freedom is largely symbolic, it remains one of the Corporation’s most visible tools for signaling civic priorities, including the City’s backing for London’s cultural and creative industries.

Professional Portfolio and Industry Impact

Dunbar has maintained a consistent presence across British television and cinema for over four decades. He is most widely recognized for his portrayal of Superintendent Ted Hastings in Line of Duty, a role for which he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the UK in 2018. The series, a ratings and critical success for the BBC, has been credited with helping to redefine long-form police drama for a mass audience.

His television credits include:

  • Ridley
  • The Hollow Crown
  • Emily
  • Ashes to Ashes
  • Broken
  • Silent Witness

Beyond acting, Dunbar has contributed to screenwriting. He co-wrote and starred in the 1991 comedy-drama Hear My Song, featuring Ned Beatty. The film received a BAFTA nomination for Best Original Screenplay and helped establish Dunbar as a creative force behind the camera as well as on screen.

Stage Transitions and Career Trajectory

The actor recently expanded his professional scope into musical theatre. In 2024, Dunbar appeared as Fred Graham/Petruchio in a production of Kiss Me, Kate at London’s Barbican Theatre. This performance marked a return to the venue where he previously worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), underscoring a career that has moved fluently between stage and screen.

Reflecting on the timeline of his career, Dunbar stated: “Having arrived in the City of London to take up my course in Drama at Guildhall School in 1980, to then work with the RSC (Royal Shakespeare Company) at the Barbican and recently, in Kiss Me, Kate, and with Guildhall Alumni, to round off this journey nearly 50 years later with the Freedom of the City of London is truly special.”

He added, “I cannot thank everyone enough for making this singular honour happen.”

By selecting Dunbar, the City is not only recognizing an individual career but also reinforcing London’s positioning of its cultural sector as a strategic asset alongside financial and professional services, a message echoed in the Corporation’s current cultural and creative industries strategy, including initiatives such as the Cultural Mile.

The Freedom of the City of London has been officially conferred.
