Iarnród Éireann Rail Shutdown Affects 18 Stations Between Dublin Connolly and Bray Over Bank Holiday Weekend

DUBLIN – Iarnród Éireann has implemented a significant operational shutdown of the rail corridor between Dublin Connolly and Bray, affecting 18 stations as part of essential maintenance works scheduled for the Bank Holiday weekend.

The suspension of services on this key artery of the Greater Dublin Area’s transit network creates a temporary capacity gap in one of the region’s most heavily utilized commuter zones. The maintenance window, which extends from Friday through Monday night, necessitates a reconfiguration of the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) system and puts additional pressure on already busy road and light-rail corridors.

As a subsidiary of Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ), the state-owned transport provider, Iarnród Éireann manages the strategic balance between routine service delivery and the long-term integrity of rail infrastructure. Such planned closures are standard operational requirements to prevent systemic failure and ensure the safety of the electrified line, and are overseen within the national rail safety and investment framework set out by the Transport (Railway Infrastructure) Act and subsequent public transport policy decisions.

The closure affects a wide range of residential and commercial hubs along the coastal corridor south of Dublin’s city center. The 18 stations remaining closed over the weekend include:

  • Tara Street
  • Pearse
  • Grand Canal Dock
  • Lansdowne Road
  • Sandymount
  • Sydney Parade
  • Booterstown
  • Blackrock
  • Seapoint, Salthill and Monkstown
  • Dún Laoghaire
  • Sandycove and Glasthule
  • Glenageary
  • Dalkey
  • Killiney
  • Shankill
  • Woodbrook
  • Bray

DART services are restricted to operations between Malahide, Howth, and Dublin Connolly stations for the duration of the works, reducing the system to a truncated northern spine while engineering crews access the southern section for track, signaling, and power maintenance.

The disruption coincides with high-volume city events, specifically the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon, which typically generates significant surges in transit demand and is one of the largest annual fixtures on Dublin’s civic calendar. The removal of the rail link between the city center and Wicklow creates a reliance on alternative transport modalities to manage the influx of attendees and residents, with local authorities warning of heavier road congestion and longer journey times.

To mitigate the loss of rail capacity, Iarnród Éireann has deployed direct bus services operating between Dublin Connolly station and Greystones throughout the weekend. These services are being treated as rail-replacement operations, with additional wayfinding and staff on major platforms to guide passengers who would ordinarily transfer to DART.

Integration with the National Transport Authority (NTA) framework allows for continued payment flexibility during the disruption. Leap cards remain valid across all Transport for Ireland (TFI) public transport services in the affected areas, including Dublin Bus and Luas, to facilitate multimodal transfers. The NTA, which allocates public service obligation funding and sets service standards for contracted operators, has positioned the arrangement as a test of the resilience of Dublin’s integrated ticketing and network-planning system.

The scale of these works reflects the ongoing challenge of maintaining aging urban rail infrastructure while managing the growth of the Dublin metropolitan area and the policy drive to shift commuters from cars to public transport. Iarnród Éireann, which operates under government-approved capital investment programs, has advised passengers to utilize the company’s website for real-time travel updates and to plan additional journey time, particularly for early-morning and late-evening services.

Rail services on the affected line are scheduled to resume following the completion of the maintenance works on Monday night, subject to final safety checks and engineering sign-off.
