LETTERKENNY – Róisín McKelvey, a 29-year-old teacher at Scoil Cholmcille, died unexpectedly on July 16.

The sudden loss of the primary school educator has prompted a significant outpouring of grief from pupils, colleagues, and the wider Donegal community.

Scoil Cholmcille Community Response

Staff and students at the Letterkenny school have paid tribute to McKelvey, describing her as a hugely popular member of the faculty and a steady presence in the school’s day-to-day life.

A spokesperson for the school issued a statement on behalf of the institution’s leadership and students:

“It is with profound sadness that the Board of Management, staff, pupils and the entire Scoil Cholmcille community have learned of the passing of our much-loved colleague, Miss Róisín Mc Kelvey. At this time of immense loss, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to her family, friends and all who knew and loved her. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this very difficult time. May her gentle soul rest in peace.”

The Board of Management, which oversees the strategic operation and governance of the primary school under Ireland’s Education Act 1998, highlighted the deep impact of the loss on the school community and confirmed that additional pastoral supports will be available to pupils and staff.

Local education stakeholders noted that the death of a serving teacher has implications beyond the classroom, affecting the continuity of learning, well-being support for children, and the staffing decisions that the school’s management must now address in the weeks ahead.

Family and Personal Background

McKelvey was a resident of Terhillion, Termon, and was formerly of Cummeen, Doochary.

She is the daughter of Neil and Eileen McKelvey and the sister of Brendan and Megan. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Cathal, niece Hannah, and grandmother Máire McGill.

Family and friends described her as a woman with a generous nature and a kind heart who touched the lives of many, both within the school and in the wider parish communities where she lived and worked.

Funeral Arrangements

The family has announced that remains will repose at the chapel of rest until Sunday evening, with members of the school community invited to pay their respects alongside relatives and neighbours.

The viewing schedule is as follows:

  • Saturday, July 19: 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, July 20: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A private cremation will follow, in line with the family’s wishes and local funeral practices as set out by the Health Service Executive’s public guidance on bereavement and funerals.
